Howdy yall

Yesterday I was invited to New Egypt Speedway by the family and team of the racer that I recently designed a vehicle wrap for. I did a wrap for his sprint car which turned out pretty sweet, and it can be seen HERE. They were very pleased with the end result, too bad on that opening night, the quarter panel ended up being completely smashed in the race. Oh well..., like they say, rubbing is racing. Speaking of one-liners, while I was at the track, it gave me the perfect opportunity to try out some Talladega Nights one-liners on the folk at the track. They didn't respond too well to my redneck vernacular, must've been because I was a city slicker. All in all, it was a pretty good experience.

color comp

my comp hasn't changed since the last layout i posted, it's a black and white scheme, like www.shinybinary.com with the images of my work as the only color. I have added the set of images I'd like to display for my portfolio on a flickr set available here. I should have the html files ready for use today.

thisisit

Here's my idea for my portfolio site, basically all the type faces and the color scheme below will be used. I modeled my resume which i will post as well after these and I think they fit well.

I'd like to link the blog page with my blog at www.blackpixi.com

and under contacts have various popular social networking links to my profiles as well.

I think a thumbnail image of my face would be cool, or it might frighten people away, I don't know, I need input on this.

5 Concepts

This is original vector art i created to go off of a blackpixi mascot or icon. I was thinking of having it on a homepage and flash animated, you can rollover and click on different parts of the face and interact with it, then you get taken into a site like gomedia's which houses my portfolio.
I've said it a lot and shared it in class, but I really like the in your face look of many professional portfolio sites, ones that showcase the work first, then the artist second.

1. For my first concept, I'd like to do a full showcase of all of my portfolio pieces in a manner like
gomedia.us does. List format, top to bottom, easy to see, and the contact information is there, but not as large as the work itself.

2. HERE I like this guys site a lot, it has information for every piece, it's clean, utilizes basic code, html/css so there's nothing to worry about flash working or not working with an employers browser/computer.

3. A popular concept, *I don't know if this is really a concept* but it's to include a wordpress blog/portfolio in one. It's tricky, and must be done cleanly to be pulled off as not overwhelming, but I think it'd be a good idea if done right. Would show an employer that you're current.

4. HERE A slideshow that displays just my work. A cool flash application, like Dave Hill

5. Michael Muller HERE He does a lot of portrait photography and portrait manipulations, thats just what i do to.

what my Portfolio shall include...................

My digital portfolio NEEDS the following:

1. Contact Information (Phone, E-mail, website, address, etc.)

2. A resume that reflects my qualifications, experience, schooling and all the formal crudentials like most consecutive beer pong wins.

3. I'd most likely like to include a short biography of interests and background information. Something that gives my hobbies, interests, some freelance jobs I've been involved with.

4. A portfolio of my digital work, in the following categories:

a. Logos
b. Print work/Typography
c. User Interfaces
d. digital images
e. photographs/portraits

hows bouts my work

This shot shows the progress of the project. The timeframe was around 30 minutes for the project and the objective of the assignment was to convey a thought or idea with simple use of text/color/placement. The idea was to convey the slogan "taste the rainbow" used by the candy Skittles in advertisements, often displaying a rainbow and the candy product. I wanted every element to be essential, without one, the piece wouldn't make sense.

pictures worth no words

This is something I did a while ago, but never got around to hosting it on flickr or anywhere on the internet for that matter. It was a typography poster for a certain candy company I did for fun (you'll never guess which one.)

"Skittles"

I thought this worked particularly well because if you subtract the text from the image, the viewer has no idea of what it's about, and if you do the same for the rainbow gradient, and leave the text, it makes no sense.

swatch + logo

array

To categorize the stuff in my portfolio, I think it'd work best to label and group them together for destined output, or perhaps genre. ie: logos, photography, images. Or perhaps output, web/print. I can think of a few ideas:

Imaging: To showcase images for ads, posters, misc. print, etc.

Logos: vector and raster logos

web: UI's, homepages

photography: to share my hobby as well as secondary freelance career

portfolio work

I have a lot of items that I am going to most likely put into my portfolio, for my own sake, I'm going to include a link to the items for viewing. All of the items on the 1st and second page will be on my portfolio.

can anyone post a comment on the critical thinking? It just says loading and the screen never changes or shows me the characters to enter in for the security shit.

Mr. Boss

I envision my superior as someone like me, just older. Someone who values work and can appreciate details that I might add. They're someone who's comfortable and willing to give me a project in it's very basic elements and expect me to turn it into a product or result, on screen or in hand. Someone in their mid thirtys, not 50-60, someone who was there to witness the digital wave in advertising, printing, and experience in the tools of the trade. I want someone to work under who I can go to if by chance I need help with something, or a technical question. Someone who thinks like me and distinguishes work from play. A large workplace, with lots of people working independently, contributing. By no means do I seek cubicle work, but I do like taking on something independently.

My work and why it's awesomely unified

Meg- you wanted to see pics of my car wraps

You can take a look at some of my work on flickr and realize that a lot of it is inspired by a theme or feel of dirty, inconsistent, grungy, urbaness. If urbaness isn't a word, it is now, and I'm going to work it into popular vernacular. For a professional approach, my style isn't the most formal, or often times appreciated. It's often mistaken for unfinished, amateur, messy, and tough on the eyes, however, it's unmistakable, which is something that seems to occur just in the process of creating it, which is why I've stuck with it. My portfolio examines a lot of on screen work I've done, and also the real life side of it. I try to include pictures of my work out in the real world, business literature, vehicle wraps, billboards, posters, flyers, cards, etc. Sometimes I think it can be the deciding factor for someone whos wondering whether all my stuff merely exists in the digital world, or whether someone actually paid me for services and went through with them to the final step of a real world product, in other words, it makes me look like I have experience. One of the things I pride myself in would be my experience in color. Additive, subtractive, creating and editing ICC's, working with CMS, spectrophotometers, calibration, systemwide color synchronization. I think it's something that hopefully an employer would recognize as an important valuable trait, as I strive to make print and screen as close as possible.

my skills

What are my skills and how can I utilize them in a portfolio? Well I'm a web major, and have created and am constantly upgrading a web blog www.blackpixi.com to get more respect in the design community. I know php/html/css/mysql. Photography is a close passion of mine as well. I do not do a whole lot of 3d/animation work, but I have some experience with FCP and protools. A lot of my work is done from scratch, I gather my own imagery, illustrate my own vectors, make custom brushes often. I want to definitely make use of my graphic abilities for a portfolio. I feel they're the strongest and will be most impressive.

People in the Industry

I've gathered through observation that people in my intended industry use as many internet resources for portfolio and networking as they can. For a showcase of work, many create wordpress backended blog sites that act as a place other designers can network with, share tips, blog about news, and link to a flickr group or portfolio that houses their work. A great designer who runs the bittbox.com site uses it to give away free design tools (which attract regular visitors) a showcase for his work, and a source of income with ad space and the amount of visitors the site attracts. I added one of my works on flickr to his flickr group with 1,500 members, and within hours it had 60 views, more than others I had up on my flickr page for weeks.
Most don't use Youtube/Vimeo as my intended field of large format advertising doesn't really use video capabilities for their work. A solid online showcase in the form of a blog, or regular website is essential. It will often give a first impression of your work, so it better be impressive or at least to the standards of your work. Flash is overtaking regular static html content as the norm, or so it seems for designers and their personal sites. Content of work is often grouped or categorized by output or media. Logos, print, websites, images, are all categorized. Dynamic content displays that you're professional, interesting, and worth checking out. It shows you're up to date on the latest trends, which companies care about if they're considering you to maintain their company image through new ages of technology. It benefits to be good at using both sides of your brain here.

I found the way the content is distributed on this site is really successful although it's not strictly categorized HERE

5 INcredible portfolios

These are by far my most favorite portfolios on the web. In order of amazingness.

1. Dave Hill

Dave Hill is probably my number one source of inspiration. I look at his work in awe. His clients are famous, his work is famous, he travels the world, he loves what he does. His style is undeniable and unmistakable. It's his trademark look, a combination of heavy post editing, high pass filters, special lighting and other tips and tricks. His website is simple, it's a flash showcase of his work, and it speaks for itself, no work experience or education. I can only hope my work would speak as powerful as his.

2. Justin Beeler

Poweful use of colors in this site, his style is similar to mine. I like his logos as well.

3. FactoryFour

UK based design agency, the website is phenominal, and the fractal art is great as well.

4. Go Media

These guys are the kings of vector art. Their work is showcased on one site and they have a blog they maintain and update as well.

5. Bittbox

Like me, this guy maintains a web blog that also showcases his work. His is a lot better. Damn Him.

I've been working with a logo for my personal and professional use and I've built this one in hopes I can get some feedback on what people think about it.

I saw this video when I was in between deciding whether to purchase a new dslr, in specific, a canon 5d mark 2. I watched this video, and bought the camera 20 minutes later.

Tokyo Reality (Canon 5D MarkII) from utsuru on Vimeo.

This is an excellent visual documentary that illustrates nightlife in tokyo and the capabilites of the first full frame dslr HD video camera. awesome

room for improvement

lots of my stuff i wouldn't consider professiona, but this one piece is really old. back in the day i made this thinking it could be a neat UI for a music site. I never finished it, and kind of half assed it, not up to par with everything else.

brand identity

I love brandy identity. It's almost like playing the part of a magician, where you can turn something into something completely different just through the power of word, color, graphic, position and size. I think its interesting how someone can associate something within a community or role by using these fundamentals. Here's a list I've gathered of what I believe to make up a brand identity or manners in which a brand is influenced.

Perception is important to an identity. It's perhaps the most basic of all the values that go into making up a brand. Essentially it's what you want people to think of when they think of your brand. easy.

Senses. Our senses create input that we process and take in as information. when you walk into an abercrombie retail store blindfolded. what senses are immediately raped? Utilizing the primary senses of our body as a way to identify with something is a great technique.

At it's most primitive form, the retail/consumer relationship thrives on the belief that selling and marketing a product to an individual is greatly enhanced when you can convince your market that your product is essential, needed, or even better, desired.

Name. You may not like it, you may not hate it, but you'll definitely remember it if it's carried out correctly. Getting a consumer to remember or associate information based on a product or service is one of the primary goals of brand identity

Emotion

Gathering

I've added a few blogs that I follow in my blogroll. Most of them own, operate, or work out of a web or creative blog that offers help to the graphic design communities. I follow most of them on a regular basis as they offer valuable freebies like textures, brush sets, etc. I also dug a little deeper and joined their flickr groups they've created with their blogs, another way to showcase my work and network!

High Level Position

For a high level position in large format advertising, most companies are looking for a minimum of 5 years working experience in a lead, or senior position in a graphics or advertising firm. A masters degree is a plus as well. Most will not be considered without some sort of post bachelors degree education. It seems graduate school these days is becoming more and more necessary.

where to begin

Here's a very informal resume:

Kyle Anthony

some of my stuff is on flickr under blackpixi7 check it out!

out in the field

An entry level position for large format advertising is ideally in design, or artwork preparation. This position is all about talent and how capable you are at producing designs and art that sell. The closest industry, the sign and print industry requires more technical knowledge of key hardware (printers, computers, software) that can be used in the production side of advertising, and information design. For someone to succeed in either, creativity is a vital ingredient in any portfolio.

Knowledge of adobe products is almost a requirement nowadays for any position involving design or advertising. However, with the inconsistent job market outlook, designers need to sell themselves in more ways than one. Skills and training in various software and equipment can only boost your appeal to employers, looking for a jack of all trades. It seems the modern graphic artist must be skilled in imagery/sound/video production/printing/web work/ and all the in betweens.

sweeet

So I got a letter in the mail today with an unfamiliar return address. I opened it up and it turns out it was a magazine called Photographers Forum, and one of the photos I entered a few months ago was selected and chosen as a finalist to appear in the hardbook published copy of the annual Best of College Photography 09'! 3,000 students apply from north america and about a hundred or so get their images chosen. the book should be out in june, but just letting everyone know im representin mercer

tools of the trade

1. I'll answer the hardware/software part of the homework first as it's the most fun :)

The position I'm after(large format advertisement) dips into multiple industries, (sign, print, advertising, graphic design), and requires varieties of software and hardware requirements. When designing something destined for output on a billboard, or other large format substrate, the use of two separate digital workstations if often required. One for designing and one for ripping or printing. The reason for this is that the drivers for most larger format (60"+) printers that print the designs are 32bit, and most design software is made to run most efficient on 64bit OS's.
Sure you could run a VMWare virtual machine with multiple OS's, however, VMware has no support for firewire which is what all printers in the industry run off of. So the hardware requirements for something in my position would be a design station computer, with essential design software (PS, AI, ID, cs3+) running on a 64bit machine, dual 24" widescreens, 24" wacom cintiq touchscreen, intel i7 processor, 8+gb ram, 10,000rpm high speed harddrives, 3way SLI *sweeeet*, i'm dreaming here...This is the design station, the computer that can handle the design, with no more parser module timeouts in PS or error, not enough ram to complete task. You cannot tell a client you can't print their file becaues of your inadequate hardware... A rip station would be a 32bit machine, running just the software required to print. It's not uncommon for files as large as 3 to 4 gb's to take hours even days to rip, and when I mean rip, I'm talking about from the time you hit print until the time the printer starts to print and process the file.

Most software thats used in the advertising industry is used for the print/sign industry as well, as you never know what kind of file type you may need to open, modify, or print. The entire Adobe Creative Suite is absolutely essential, as well as knowledge of ripping or print software, such as Flexi, Gerber, and AutoCad (especially since PS CS4 has more support for 3d objects, I forsee a shift towards more 3d capable software in the future.) I use go media's Arsenal line of fully scalable vector graphics. Check them out at gomedia.us they have freebies!!

Technology in the advertising and desigin industry is always changing. Your badass new design rig can be outdated before you can say intel fsb 1333 3-way SLI. Most hardware does not stay new for long. Time is money. The faster your hardware, the faster you can crank out work for clients, the faster you can get paid.

2. To research three more career positions, I chose to use the site careerbuilder.com, this is what I found:

1. Amsterdam Printing in NY is looking for a designer to do design destined for print, and web use. Basic requirements such as 2 years exp. 4 yr degree are required. They list the position as one being a designer for print, manufacturing, and marketing, right up my alley.

HERE

2. NINTENDO! is hiring a graphic designer to prepare graphics for websites(oftentimes satellite sites for game releases) I am majoring in web design, and extensive knowledge of basic html, xml, css is required. Acute attention to detail is required as well as up to date video game knowledge, which I definitely have!

HERE

3. CW11, a news agency is looking for someone to prepare graphics that go alongside headlines for news casts. I think this is an interesting position because it involves information design, or involving themed design with essential information. Deadlines are very important, which is something I enjoy working with.

When I grow up I want to be a...

About four years ago, I decided I wanted to follow in my fathers footsteps and become an electrical engineer. I understood math fairly well, took all the appropriate courses in high school, and even received several scholarships to study in the field with a few well known companies. However after attending my first semester at MCCC under the NJSTARS tuition program, I quickly learned that engineering wasn't for me and that my hobbies at the time (airbrushing, tattooing, and music) would ultimately fuel my passion for something in the arts. I enlisted in the graphic/web/DMA program at MCCC and didn't look back. It went hand in hand with my job at a local graphics company in Trenton, where I designed and printed large format graphics (billboards, vehicle wraps, bus wraps for bands and such).
As I got better and better at making graphics and illustrations my interest in the field and industry of graphic design got stronger. I started to outsource my work on various freelancing sites such as 99designs.com where I could make a quick $100 for a few hours work, or registering with modelmayhem.com and doing portraits to add to my portfolio. I enjoyed doing large format work because it incorporated root information design and artwork that would be seen by thousands, BIG. Fast forward a year, when one afternoon at work, my boss who is heavily involved with dog agility competitions came to me and asked me if I wanted to design a few ads for a magazine called "Clean Run" a nationally printed magazine about dog agility competitions. I knew nothing about dog agility and that was ok, because I would just be laying out tribute ads for fallen dogs lol, and it would be awesome to have my work in a nationally printed magazine. Well, after my first ad went over well, I started doing more, and eventually did a 2 page spread for one of my bosses dog agility friends. My boss would bring in the magazine that month and she'd give me a copy and I'd hang them on my wall, each issue with each ad I did open to that page. It was pretty neat I have to admit, seeing your work you did on your computer get transformed and printed into a magazine. After that I was hooked, I was on various forums offering my services for free, just to see if I could get a hook and get my work out there.
I ended up doing websites for a cookie company, Phoebe Murphy Cookies, a powder coating company Powtek in Trenton, anything. Then in Summer of '08, I attended Vans Warped Tour at RaceWay Park in Englishtown, NJ as I always do, where I work part time every now and then. It's a pretty neat gig. I drive around in a golf cart all day and take dehydrated or beaten up kids to first aid, sometimes hot girls too. Well, while I was around, I take this cute Romanian girl to her lost band. She gets talking to me in my golf cart as we're driving and she tells me that she's from this band called "Me Talk Pretty" and was interested in my stuff. I ended up doing their website and eventually she approached me with talks of getting their bands tour bus wrapped. Now for those who don't know what a wrap is, it's essentially designing something on a computer, printing it on a large format printer on giant sheets of vinyl media, then sticking those pieces on the surface of whatever it is you intend to wrap, just like a billboard. I had never done a bus wrap before, but this was big, literally. I did the design for them, a 2gb file at 72dpi in 1/4 scale mind you, and it wasn't long before I was contracted by this other band called "I am Alpha and Omega" to do their bus wrap. It was really neat, seeing my stuff on the sids of 45ft buses in full color giant illustrations!
Now, I know everyone always thinks they always need to know someone on the inside to get a job, or the hookup or a position, but thats not always true. I used free means of online advertising to get my work out there, freelance. I have an uncle who is a singer and music producer in a rock band but he lives in CA, and I never contracted him for work. So with all that being said, once I graduate from Mercer this spring, with the NJSTARS program, I can attend Rutgers with NJSTARSII for free assuming I maintain my 3.0GPA at Mercer which I have done. Once I'm done with Rutgers my ideal position would be somewhere doing full scale illustrations either for bands touring, advertising firms, etc.

For the five positions we're supposed to lookup, I decided to use the site that I owe so much to, Craigslist.

Craigslist is great. It represents the most basic functions in terms of layout and features, but its the simplicity of the website that makes it so great, every hear the term, if it ain't broke don't fix it? yeah...KISS (google, helvetica, the big mac, blue jeans. dont mess with a good thing

When looking for a job on craigslist, it first asks you to locate the area in which you're looking in. New Jersey>Central Jersey> BINGO, everything that Craigslist has to offer is before your eyes at this stage. On the right, jobs, awesome, art/media/design, thats me.

1. Multimedia Developer, Bridgewater, NJ - Using FL, and PS to create training videos for our company, comp. 35-55k.
2. Wanted: someone to develop a social networking site - I actually started to create a SNS back in the day with Drupal, a CMS that I wanted to use to create an Instant Messaging archive site. called impile. http://www.bv-techsolutions.com/beta/drupal/impile.com
3. Product Photographer - When I did bus wraps for the bands at Warped Tour, often times, they had nothing to give me for artwork, so I had to get and make my own, which included photos, and lots of them (you know how big a bus is?)

4. Admin / Design - I don't really understand this position, they claim to be the best at what they do and are looking for people to join their staff WingIt Innovations. i like being the best at what i do...

5. Flash/Web Designer - This is my major, web design, so this looks like a good opportunity as a fallout for my first choice (large format design) because there seems to be less of a demand for large format advertising with the current economic situation. Although the best thing you can do for your business in a down market is advertise...
